The necessity of the USA military

Today I was involved in a discussion where everyone around me had a negative attitude towards military recruiters. At first I was confused as to why, but then it gradually came out that everyone of them belived strongly that the USA has no need for a military AT ALL.  The complete absence of a military is an idea I never encountered before and I've contemplated it nonstop since that discussion.  So here is the topic...

TOPIC: Should the United States maintain a military?

Online Journal admissibility in Court

This one was submitted by divinemsF (and btw from now on anybody can offer a topic by giving it as a comment on the Dec 7, 2005 entry.)

"... Since the guy in PA, murdered his girlfriend's parents, there's been all this conflict over their xanga/myspace accounts and tons of people went and commented, etc.  Even on their friends' sites.  There's legal debate over whether the photos and things he posted may be used as evidence to suggest he was a violent person and it wasn't just a spur-of-the-moment action.  You can look to blogrings and find people with eating disorders who support each other (see thin_is_what_you_want for an example), people who cut themselves and support each other, and all sorts of habits that can be considered self-destructive and harmful.  Also, a lot of people vent anger and say "I'll kill someone!" and stuff on their webpages or blogs.  It might be interesting to discuss the legality/ethical implications of using someone's internet profile to say something about them legally.  As in, how private are these public profiles, and should they be considered as evidence about you in a legal matter?  How harmless is it to say, "I want to die" or "I want to rip someone's head off," on your blog when some people who say those things turn around and do something really violent?  Should you intervene if someone is in anorexic or cutter blogrings?  If you can use someone's personal site as evidence, can you also see what their friends' sites say? ..."

TOPIC: Should online journals be admissible in a court of law (evidence for a crime or reporting cyber bullying)?

Tookie Williams

As word spread Monday afternoon that Gov. Schwarzenegger had turned down Stanley Tookie Williams' last-ditch bid for clemency, reaction on the streets where Williams launched the Crips gang 35 years ago was muted.

Some residents were saddened by the news, saying the governor had missed a golden opportunity to show true compassion hours before Williams' scheduled execution just past midnight. Others, though, felt anything but compassion for the man whose legacy in south central Los Angeles stills seems like nothing but gang colors, bullets and blood.

TOPIC: Whats your opinion about the Tookie Williams Death Sentence? This may spin into death penality in general if you wish to talk about that.

Note: If you are not familiar with Tookie Williams, he is the Crips gang founder who has reformed once sent to prision and has written numerous children books, almost winning a Nobel prize one year. Here is a link to his website, its not the home page because as his exacution nears its geting too much traffic. http://www.tookie.com/letter_to_jailed_youth.no.1.htm
